Lacrosse in Sweden
The first Lacrosse game in Sweden was played in 1988. A gang of happy enthusiasts started to practise the sport in a park area in central Stockholm. They named the team Stockholm Lacrosse. To help the sport grow further Stockholm Lacrosse was devided in to four new teams in the beginning of the 90's. Farsta Lacrosse and Sundbyberg Lacrosse still exists today. The first Swedish championships was played in 1992. There are today eight teams playing in the Swedish league representing Lund in the south to Luleå up north.
Sweden made their international debut in 1990 against Czechoslovakia. The first apperence at the World cup was playing in the emerging nations tournament in Manchester 1994. Sweden is one of the six founding members of the European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) which today consists of 22 member nations. Sweden has, with one exception, particpated in every World and European championship since 1994.
The Swedish mens Lacrosse team is currenty ranked fourth in Europe after two consecutive European Championships (Prague 2004 and Lahti 2008). Sweden was ranked eighth at the World cup in Perth Australia 2002.
Manchester 2010 FIL World Cup
The World Lacrosse championships will be held from the 15th - 24th July 2010. 30 nations will compete for the title which will make the tournament the biggest Lacrosse World championships to date. Team England is currently European champions and Manchester is considered the centre for Lacrosse in the UK. The World Cup will be played in three divisions where the highest ranking teams will play against each other in the blue division. However all competeing teams will have the chance to win the tournament by winning their division and qualifying for the semi final through a play in game.
The tournament will be broadcasted in both Europe and North America.
